Like its American counterpart MegaMillions, US Powerball has had many facelifts and alterations to its game format. Originally known as Lotto* America, the US lottery rebranded to its current guise as Powerball on 19 April 1992.

Back in 1992 the format of the game was pick 5 from 45 and 1 from 45 that was originally a 1 : 54,979,154 chance of winning the jackpot. To win the jackpot now you select 5 main numbers from 1 to 69 and 1 extra number out of 26 numbers. The odds of winning the jackpot are now 1 : 292,201,338. A breakdown of all the odds for each prize division, together with estimated returns is included below.

The American Powerball took over the title as the world record holder in terms of the biggest jackpot payout. On 13 January 2016 its huge jackpot of $1.6 billion USD (approx. $2.3 billion) was won by 3 lucky punters in Florida, Tennessee and California. The main prize is usually paid out as a 30 year cash annuity option. Find articles about the American Powerball lottery in our US Power Magazine section.

Can I Place a Bet On US Powerball?

You can bet on US Powerball with Lottoland from Australia (excludes South Australian residents), where you bet on the result of the official draw, rest assured your winnings will be the same as if you had entered it for real.

What Is the Format of the US Powerball Lottery?

The most recent amendment to the US Powerball lottery came October 4th, 2015. The amount of playable numbers was increased from 59 to 69 while the Powerball number range was reduced from 35 to 26. The Powerplay feature was also tweaked with the addition of a 10x multiplier on draws where the jackpot is less than US$150 million. This only applies to prize divisions three to nine, but potentially allows players to potentially win ten times their value.

How Much Does it Cost to Bet on US Powerball?

A single standard game begins at a cost of $5 each. A bonus feature called PowerPlay that boosts winnings in all prize divisions except the jackpot category can be added for just $1.50 extra.
Lottoland® reserves the right to increase single game prices without notice at any point due to the rising insurance costs and demand for each jackpot. Example price increase for US Power based on jackpot size:

  • Up to $500m USD: $5 per standard game
  • $501m USD - $1b USD: $10 per standard game
  • Over $1b USD $15 per standard game

How Do I Fill out a US Power Bet Slip?

The US Power bet slip contains 6 games for you to fill in. A single game needs a minimum of 5 main numbers from a range 1–69, and 1 extra number out of 26. Each field will tell you how many more numbers are required to complete a single game.

You can select more than 5 main numbers and your selections will automatically be combined to all the various possible games in the draw, and this is known as a System bet at Lottoland®.

Serious lotto players prefer this option or those who bet with friends or in a syndicate and want to give each player a number to choose. You can also add a feature called PowerPlay that boosts your winnings in all prize categories except the jackpot.

What Is the PowerPlay?

The PowerPlay feature allows you to boost the potential winnings on all non-jackpot prize divisions. Should you win prize division 2, your winnings will be doubled. If you win at any other non-jackpot prize division your winnings will be either x2, x3, x4 or x5 depending on the PowerPlay ball that is drawn. If the jackpot is below $150 million an additional x10 PowerPlay ball is added. It costs $1.50 to activate the PowerPlay feature.

What Are the US Powerball Prize Divisions?

US Powerball is a 5 from 69 and 1 from 26 lottery. The prize you win is determined by the numbers you correctly predict, and of course the more numbers you get right, the higher the prize division you qualify for.

To win the jackpot, Prize Category 1, all of the draw numbers i.e. 5 of the balls drawn from 69 plus the Powerball from 26 have to be matched.

The total lottery prize money is divided into 9 divisions.

The prize money for US Powerball with PowerPlay applies to all prize divisions except the jackpot. The winnings for each category will be multiplied by the PowerPlay number drawn from 2, 3, 4 or 5. The second prize divisions with the PowerPlay option is capped at a maximum of $2 million USD (approx. $2.5 million) regardless of the random multiplier selected.

What Is a Subscription?

Subscriptions remove the hassle of buying repeat games and the fear of missing out on that big jackpot win. Our Subscription feature allows you to set up a reoccuring bet or bets on a given lottery draw. The subscription is open ended and will run for as long as you want it to. You can opt out at any time and cancel the subscription in your player account. Please find more information here: How to cancel a subscription

What Does "Place bet when" mean?

This option allows you to only bet when the jackpot is a set amount or higher. So if you choose $7 million, you will only bet on the draw when the jackpot is at a minimum of $7 million.

What Are My Potential Winnings?

US Powerball has no maximum jackpot or number of times it can rollover, so it keeps increasing in size until it’s won. The minimum starting jackpot size is $40 million USD (approx. $52 million) and you have a 1 in 292,201,338 chance of winning the main prize. The second prize division awards $1 million USD (approx. $1.29 million) and if you have the PowerPlay option enabled then your winnings would be $2 million USD (approx. $2.5 million).

On 22 January 2014 the PowerPlay random multiplier was reintroduced for all winnings except the jackpot and prize division 2 (correctly match 5 main numbers). So for example if you had activated the PowerPlay option for US Power and you selected 4 main numbers & the extra P Ball (prize division 3) and the PowerPlay was number 5, you would have won $50,000 USD (approx. $64,000) instead of $10,000 USD (approx. $12,000).

How Do I Get My US Power Winnings?
