Meet El Gordo’s Little Brother – El Nino
How to Bet on Spain’s El Nino Lottery

Due to legislation coming into effect in 2019, we can no longer offer lottery betting and as such some content may no longer be relevant.
El Nino is El Gordo’s little brother. The exciting follow-up draw to the Christmas Lottery follows a similar format and boasts an estimated prize pool of €700 million (approx. $900 million). Now, thanks Lottoland, Australian players have access to bet on both of these mammoth Spanish Jackpots!
1. What Is ‘El Nino’?
The El Nino is an annual Spanish lottery which offers prizes totalling €700 million (approx. $900 million) and 50 jackpot prizes worth $3 million for a full ticket. It is not only one of the biggest lotteries, but starting back in 1941, has become one of Spain’s favourite annual traditions and a noted national event to start the New Year.
The El Nino draw takes place on the 6th of January and its huge prize pool is second to only its older brother El Gordo.
It is one of Spain’s most popular lotteries due to the tremendous winning odds – 1 in 3 players take home a prize! Each ticket has over 37,000 different winning combinations!
2. How Can I Bet on El Nino in Australia?
Betting on the El Nino from Australia used to be impossible, as you have to be a resident of Spain to participate in the official draw. Now, thanks to Lottoland, Australian players can bet on the outcome of the draw and have the potential to win the exact same prizes as their Spanish counterparts!
Simply make your bets exactly as if you were entering the official draw, and you stand to win the exact same prizes – the only difference is we pay you out directly! (What is Lotto Betting?)
3. How Does El Nino Work?
Tickets are sold with different ticket numbers, each consisting of five digits. So basically, each ticket can be any number between 00000 and 99999. Each number is only printed 50 times, so in the official draw you could potentially win the same prize as 50 other people!
At Lottoland, simply select your five-digit number and the share you wish to purchase and the results will be exactly the same as if you were in the official draw!
4. How Much Does a Bet on the El Nino Cost?
At Lottoland, you select the number you wish to bet on and decide if you want to purchase a full share or a part share. A full share costs $349.99, but at Lottoland you have up to seven different share options that you can purchase! The most common is the ‘decimos’ which is a 1/10th share for $49.99, but there is even the option for a 1/100th share for just $6.99. Obviously, the bigger the share of the prize – the more you win!
5. How Much Can I Win on El Nino?
The top prize ‘El Nino’ is €2 milion (approx. $3 million) and despite it’s relatively low jackpot amount (compared to the huge American lotteries) the odds are actually in your favour to win! The odds of winning the jackpot are just 1:100,000 compared to the MegaMillions which is 1:302,575,350.
In fact, the odds are so good that 1 in 3 people walk away with a prize. To add to that, there is over 17 different prize categories that are available! The goal of the ‘El Nino’ is to share the wealth, and it definitely shares its prizes generously.
6. What Does El Nino Actually Mean?
The name ‘El Nino’ means “the child” in Spanish and is held on the 6th of January annually on “Dia de los reyes” – the day in which the Three Kings came to give gifts to the newborn Jesus “El Nino”.
Although, ‘El Nino’ may directly translate to “the child”, it is definitely not small in stature! The ‘El Nino’ is one of the best lotteries to play and now you have the chance to bet on it at Lottoland!
